Getting My Run On

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Along with the throngs of other people who make fitness resolutions at the start of the new year, Kevin and I joined a gym in January. We were actually pretty faithful about going 3-5 times a week up until about a month ago when we decided we were throwing our money away at the gym and that we could work out just as well at home.

We thought this in spite of the fact that we have no cardio equipment at our house and Texas in the summer = hell hot so outside cardio is NOT an option. But, hey, we DO have a yoga mat, an exercise ball, some hand weights and Kevin bought a kettlebell that has weights you can take off and on. Plus! I recorded a lot of shows off FitTV (hello, Gilad!). And off we went determined to give it our best shot.

SURPRISE!

We failed.

There is just something about going to a gym that makes working out happen for us. So this week we joined back up. Ahhhh. Real workout equipment, I have missed you so!

This go around, I have added motivation because my work will be participating in a 5k run in September and I'd actually like to run part/most of it. Running is not really something I've done much of but I thought a small fun run thing would be a good thing to get me going in it. I had that bright idea before knowing how far 5K is. It's 3 miles. THREE MILES!

EEP!

Oh geez! I've never run even a mile before without stopping a LOT and wanting to die. But I'm 31 now and up for new challenges so I searched for "how to train for a 5k" and I found this great website with a plan to get people from couch potatoes to running a 5k in 9 weeks or something like that and they even have a facebook group that posts tips and inspiration.

Couch potatoes with athletic ambitions...them's my peeps.

I printed out the plan and looked it over. It seemed pretty reasonable...up until I got to the end weeks wherein running for 25 minutes straight is required but then I went back to the first several weeks which starts you off running in intervals of 60 to 90 seconds. I thought that sounded like something I could do and figured why not give it a try?!

So far so good.

Tonight I did the first day of the first week and I didn't die. In fact, I didn't even come close to passing out/fainting/wanting to cut my time on the treadmill short. I went for 45 minutes and was shocked that it had gone so quickly. A good sign, no?

I plan on documenting my progress here and so that I'll have some sort of accountability.

Anyone want to join me?

I'm so proud of you! I'm not a runner either, but a 3 miler sounds very doable! You can do it! I'll take a look at the blog you posted and see if it's something I could do...no gym membership here, just the great outdoors...

Hey, I've been running 3 1/2 miles about 3 or 4 times a week for almost the last 8 years. I never considered myself a runner, but it was cheap and I can do it just outside my door. It was hard at first, but it is SO in your head - if you can just get your head in it, you can run much further than your body says you can. I'm sure the program you are following will work great...just keep your mind positive and on the goal. I know you can do it!!!

I have always wanted to run in a fun run, but I have yet to do so. I have a friend that asked if I wanted to run the "Rim to Rim" this September - that's from the bottom of the canyon to the top and back down again. I'm not sure I want to do it, as I HATE to run up even the slightest incline. I may just make it my goal now that you've set a challenge yourself...will let ya know!

Emily...check it out. It would be fun to do it with someone although I know you have quite a bit on your plate right now.

Stacey...thanks for the encouragement. I'm really interested in seeing what I can make my body do. I've seen how flabby I can get it! lol. Now it's time to go in the other direction, I think!

I also hear ya' on the incline thing. Yucky! But it would be awesome for you to push yourself and give it a try! At least it's not Robie Creek!!
