Kevin's First Guest Post

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

So Shelley and I decided that I should start a weekly ‘guest posting’. I had created kevandshell.com to be your portal into our lives, but Shelley’s blog has taken off (at least within the family and our corps of friends) so this is a much better place for me to post my thoughts. We also thought it would be a great way for you all to see my side of things… however interesting Shelley’s may be.

Our first month in Texas has been great. Rockwall is such a great place to live. We feel like we’re in a small community with all of the amenities (Best Buy, Circuit City, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc) yet, we’re only 30 minutes to downtown Dallas.

The neighborhood we live in is nice and quiet, except for the barking dogs. It’s the weirdest thing… people don’t shut their dogs up… and apparently neighbors don’t complain. Rather than be the squeaky wheel, we’ve decided to become good Texans and just deal with it. We love the house though, and Shelley’s really done a great job of making it our home.

Two of the weirdest things about living in Dallas are the number of restaurants, and number of churches. There are restaurants everywhere… Dallasites (yes, that’s the correct term… I would have opted for Dallasonians or Dallasinos… but whatever) eat out an average of 5 nights a week… and there are more restaurants per capita than New York City… and this makes the average Dallasite not thin.

The churches… wow… they are huge. I can’t even really explain it, but nearly every church is massive. There are a few neighborhood churches that you’ll see while driving on the freeways (and I’m sure there are plenty that you don’t see)… and none of them are mormon wards… in fact, we’ve seen 1. Which weird coming from such an LDS saturated area.

Other than that, the weather has been dumb. It’s been colder here than Boise mostly… we’ve had a couple of nice days, but overall it’s been stupid. In fact… I am pretty sure that Dallas has had more snowy days than Boise since we left a month ago. I’m sure than in 2 months I’ll be praying for that weather to come back…

Well, it’s been fun. I will see you all next week…
